Summary

A New York Times bestseller!

A boy who accidentally bonds with a magical Beast must set off on an adventure in the mysterious Woods in this “wholesome, delightful” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review), and cheeky middle grade fantasy debut—perfect for fans of Nevermoor and How to Train Your Dragon

The last thing Barclay Thorne ever wanted was an adventure。

Thankfully, as an apprentice to the town’s mushroom farmer, Barclay need only work hard and follow the rules to one day become the head mushroom farmer himself。 No danger required。 But then Barclay accidentally breaks his town’s most sacred rule: never ever EVER stray into the Woods, for within the Woods lurk vicious magical Beasts。

To Barclay’s horror, he faces a fate far worse than being eaten: he unwittingly bonds with a Beast and is run out of town by an angry mob。 Determined to break this bond and return home, Barclay journeys to find the mysterious town of Lore Keepers, people who have also bonded with Beasts and share their powers。

But after making new friends, entering a dangerous apprenticeship exam, and even facing the legendary Beast of the Woods, Barclay must make a difficult choice: return to the home and rules he’s always known, or embrace the adventure awaiting him。

This paperback edition includes a brand new, highly-illustrated map of the Woods。

Overall good book, but why did Soren have to seem like a child predator? Anyway, good plot and characters。

I think my time for reading middle grade is over 🥺 I’m just not intrigued enough anymore。 The stakes are too low。 I think I’ll finish my favorite series I started but this won’t be one of those

My 11 year old granddaughter and I read this together and really liked it。 I found it a little confusing at times but she seemed to follow fine

Super fun adventure!

Did I only enjoy this book so much because Steve West narrates it? Vaguely possible。 But did I also love the story and the world and Barclay as our narrator? Definitely。

This is a generally fun middle-grade fantasy book, and shares a common trope with books like "Amari and the Night Brothers," namely, a "normal" child from a non-magical background discovers they are magical and undergoes trials/tests/competitions to win a prestigious spot in the magical training program。 In fact, there were MANY parallels between "The Accidental Apprentice" and "Amari and the Night Brothers," made all the more obvious because I just read Amari last week。 :P So, 3。7 star rating。 This is a generally fun middle-grade fantasy book, and shares a common trope with books like "Amari and the Night Brothers," namely, a "normal" child from a non-magical background discovers they are magical and undergoes trials/tests/competitions to win a prestigious spot in the magical training program。 In fact, there were MANY parallels between "The Accidental Apprentice" and "Amari and the Night Brothers," made all the more obvious because I just read Amari last week。 :P So, 3。7 star rating。 Why? - World-building was fantastic。 I liked the rural medieval deep-forest setting, with the rustic and slightly disreputable forest town。 - The magic system (and the magical beasts especially) were fun and didn't seem to have too many plot holes。 - Barclay, our main character。 Unfortunately, he is the reason I gave this book 3。7 stars rather than 4 or 5 stars。 He was SO IRRITATING! He was grumpy and unpleasant and stubborn and generally wilful and rude throughout THE ENTIRE BOOK! His redeeming quality is that this is a series, and this book laid the foundation for some excellent character development which I hope will occur in the subsequent books。 He did have a change of heart at the end, and we could see the gradual shift in his world-view, but he did remain pretty miserable。 Ugh。 - Most of the side characters were interesting enough。 - The writing was great。 Nothing wrong, light, easy to follow, quite enjoyable。 So yes, in general this wasn't a bad book and I would recommend it to people, with the understanding that the main character is a bit of a drag。 。。。more

Loved this book! It’s like Lord of the Rings meets Pokémon! The characters were great and very likable, the plot twist was unexpected, pacing was great, and the character development in both Barclay and Tadg was very nice。 All the Beasts were really cool designs as well especially the Ischray and Lufthund。 I can’t wait to read the rest of this series!

**4。5** A really cute story about finding yourself, letting go, and facing the harder option(even when it seems impossible)。 Definitely gives off a ‘Fantastic Beasts’ meets ‘Pokémon’ type of feel。 Barclay is a great main character, and you instantly know Viola is going to be a great friend/partner to him。 Tadg has a well written character arc, with that wonderful enemies-to-friends that I love。 The beasts are super cool, and were described in fantastic detail so that I could really envision thei **4。5** A really cute story about finding yourself, letting go, and facing the harder option(even when it seems impossible)。 Definitely gives off a ‘Fantastic Beasts’ meets ‘Pokémon’ type of feel。 Barclay is a great main character, and you instantly know Viola is going to be a great friend/partner to him。 Tadg has a well written character arc, with that wonderful enemies-to-friends that I love。 The beasts are super cool, and were described in fantastic detail so that I could really envision their battles, or see them scampering in the Wilderlands。 I can’t wait to see more of what Root can do! There are some awesome scenes, but I feel like we’ve not fully tapped into his full power just yet。 A really fun start to this Middle Grade series! 。。。more

The Accidental Apprentice is a joyous read for anyone who loves classic fantasy that's perfect for the whole family。 It is categorized as middle-grade, but I definitely see that as a starting point and not the only audience who would love this series, so if you're an older reader, still consider picking this one up! Barclay Thorne is an incredible new hero in the fantasy genre and I cannot wait to see how his story ends。 The Accidental Apprentice is a joyous read for anyone who loves classic fantasy that's perfect for the whole family。 It is categorized as middle-grade, but I definitely see that as a starting point and not the only audience who would love this series, so if you're an older reader, still consider picking this one up! Pretty breezy YA fantasy。 Fun if you like beats! Main character was annoying most of the book but I enjoyed it for what it was

I’ve had my eye on this for months and months, and I’ve had it on my owned TBR for a while too, and I’m so pleased to have finally gotten to it last month。 It follows a boy named Barclay, who has always felt like a misfit in his home of Dullshire, and then he accidentally becomes bonded with a beast (which is strictly forbidden in Dullshire, as is any use of magic)。 He gets chased out of town with pitchforks, and ends up entering in this competition to become an apprentice to someone else magica I’ve had my eye on this for months and months, and I’ve had it on my owned TBR for a while too, and I’m so pleased to have finally gotten to it last month。 It follows a boy named Barclay, who has always felt like a misfit in his home of Dullshire, and then he accidentally becomes bonded with a beast (which is strictly forbidden in Dullshire, as is any use of magic)。 He gets chased out of town with pitchforks, and ends up entering in this competition to become an apprentice to someone else magical, although in his case he’s hoping they’ll be able to help lose his beast and go back to his life as an apprentice mushroom farmer, which he didn’t really like but feels obligated to do to honour his deceased parents。 The competition aspect was so exciting and something I almost always love reading, so that was really fun, and I loved the twist towards the end of this a lot as I just wasn’t expecting it and I’m always down to be surprised by something in a fun way。 I loved watching Barclay grow throughout the narrative, and his friendship with wonderful Viola was another huge highlight for me, as was the super interesting worldbuilding。 I’ll definitely be continuing with the series, which was recently announced to be seven books long and I believe will have more queer rep as we get further in, which is always exciting to hear。 。。。more

This book kind of reminds me of Harry Potter but there are enough differences to make it interesting。

4。5 stars。 Fantastic audiobook。 The narrator deserves an award, they had me chuckling the whole time。 Barclay reminded me of my youngest brother, so that may be partly why I found his attitude/personality so funny when he's obnoxious。 Also this book is a great alternative to HP。 Just throwing that out there。 Lots of Pokemon vibes too。 I just loved it。 4。5 stars。 Fantastic audiobook。 The narrator deserves an award, they had me chuckling the whole time。 Barclay reminded me of my youngest brother, so that may be partly why I found his attitude/personality so funny when he's obnoxious。 Also this book is a great alternative to HP。 Just throwing that out there。 Lots of Pokemon vibes too。 I just loved it。 。。。more

I love Amanda Foody and I love middle grade so I was so excited for this。 It didn't live up to my wildest dreams but it did make me smile and it had excellent full bodied worldbuilding。 I look forward to her continuation of the series and of her middle grade。*I also wouldn't recommend the audiobook, I found the narration was over the top at times and took me out of the narrative I love Amanda Foody and I love middle grade so I was so excited for this。 It didn't live up to my wildest dreams but it did make me smile and it had excellent full bodied worldbuilding。 I look forward to her continuation of the series and of her middle grade。*I also wouldn't recommend the audiobook, I found the narration was over the top at times and took me out of the narrative 。。。more
